The hardest part of research is not the research. It is the first week, when you have no idea what you are supposed to be doing and everyone around you seems to already know. I want to take that week apart, because almost nothing in it is as hard as it looks.
This is written for the version of me from two years ago: a high school student with no lab access, no family friends who are professors, and no clue what a literature review was.
Start with a question you actually have
Most students start by picking a field that sounds impressive. That is backwards, and it stalls almost immediately, because you cannot sustain months of reading on a topic you chose for how it looks on an application.
Instead, write down something you have genuinely wondered about. Why do some people get sicker than others from the same virus. Why a policy that works in one city fails in the next. Why your commute got worse after they added a lane. Real questions are specific and slightly annoying to answer. That is the point.
You are not committing to this question forever. You are giving yourself a direction to read in, which is the only thing you need on day one.
Read three papers badly before you read one well
Nobody tells you that reading your first academic paper is supposed to be miserable. You will not understand most of it. That is normal and it is not a signal about your intelligence.
Use Google Scholar or your library's database, search your question in plain language, and open the three most recent review articles you can find. Reviews summarize a whole field, so they are far friendlier than a single experiment. For each one, do this:
- Read the abstract, then the last paragraph of the introduction. That paragraph almost always states exactly what the paper is trying to do.
- Skip the methods entirely on the first pass. You are not evaluating their statistics yet.
- Read the discussion. Authors are unusually honest there about what did not work and what is still open.
- Write down every word you did not understand. Look up five of them. Ignore the rest for now.
After three papers, you will start seeing the same names and the same unresolved arguments. That repetition is you building a map of the field. It happens faster than people expect, usually inside a couple of weeks.
Find the gap, and keep it small
A research question worth working on is one where you can honestly say nobody has clearly answered this specific thing. Papers hand you these for free, in the discussion, in sentences that start with future work should or this remains unclear.
Your instinct will be to pick something enormous. Resist it. A question you can actually finish beats a question that sounds impressive and dies half done. Cure for a disease is not a project. Whether a specific intervention changes a specific outcome in a specific group is a project.
You need a mentor more than you need a lab
Students fixate on getting into a lab. What actually unblocks you is one person who has done research before and will look at your work for twenty minutes every couple of weeks.
That person can be a graduate student, a teacher with a research background, or an undergraduate two years ahead of you. They do not need to be famous. They need to be reachable and willing to tell you when your question is too broad.

What you can skip
A lot of what looks mandatory is not:
- You do not need to learn statistics before you start. Learn the specific test your project needs, when it needs it.
- You do not need a wet lab. Enormous amounts of real research are done with public datasets, surveys, and existing literature.
- You do not need to be in twelfth grade. Starting earlier mostly means you have more time to be wrong first.
- You do not need to pay for a program. Cost is not what separates real research experience from decorative research experience.
The first month, concretely
Week one, write your question and find three reviews. Week two, read them and list what is unresolved. Week three, narrow to one question you could answer with data you can actually get. Week four, write one page describing what you would do, and send it to someone who can tell you what is wrong with it.
That one page is worth more than a semester of intending to start. It is also the point where most students discover the work is more interesting than they expected, and less gated than they were told.
